Pressing while piecing
Hey there! Are you ready to dive into the wonderful world of piecing a quilt? Well, let’s talk about of one the most rewarding parts of piecing: pressing in between steps.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Pressing? Pfft, that's no big deal. I'll just do it at the end." But, pressing in between steps can elevate your quality of work immediately.
First of all, let's get to the reasons why. Pressing in between steps helps to set your seams, making sure that your fabric stays in place and your blocks are nice and square.
But there's more to it than just setting seams. Pressing in between steps also helps to distribute your fabric's moisture evenly, preventing any stretching or distortion.
We can’t forget about the aesthetic aspect of pressing in between steps. By pressing your fabric in the right direction, you can create those crisp, clean lines that give your quilt that professional look. Plus, it helps to avoid any unsightly puckering or bunching that can happen if your fabric isn't pressed properly.
Now, I know that pressing can be a pain in the butt. It's not the most exciting part of quilting, and it can be tempting to skip it altogether. But trust me, taking the extra time to press in between steps is well worth it in the end. I like to batch sew, with plans of pressing a lot of different pieces at the same time.
My favorite pressing tip is to press, lift, press(press a spot, lift and move the iron to a new spot, and press again. repeat over entire area). We aren’t ironing wrinkles out of clothes. Our goal in pressing quilt pieces is to enhance the shapes we are curating. If you’re sliding your iron around like it’s on a LSD trip, it will show in your finished work.
So give your iron a little love and appreciation. It may not be the most glamorous tool in your sewing room, but it's definitely important. So don't skimp on the pressing. Happy quilting!
